About Spence

On Sunday, June 25, 2017, Spencer was in a tragic freak accident while playing in his league’s championship flag football game. While attempting to make a hit, he stepped too low and the other player’s hip collided with his neck. The impact shattered his 5th vertebrae leaving him temporarily paralyzed from the neck down.

Spencer was taken to Prince George’s County Hospital Center where he went into an 8-hour surgery to repair the vertebrae and realign his neck. After surgery he still remained paralyzed from middle of his rib cage on down. After two and half weeks he was transferred to a rehabilitation center in DC where he remained for another 6 weeks.

As of today, he remains in good spirits. He has feeling down to his waist and slight sensation in his legs and feet. His upper body is getting stronger every day and he has almost regained complete control of his hands and fingers. We are praying for a full recovery, however, that will take some time.

Spencer is now home, but will be learning to tackle life from a wheelchair. This new change requires a lot of new equipment for Spence to regain his independence. While still being the father of two young children, ages 3 and 8, we are making every effort possible to help relieve his medical expenses. So we have started "Sprint for Spence," a 5K to raise money for him and his family.

For anyone who cannot make the walk, and simply wants to donate to help Spencer and his family, he currently has a gofundme page you can donate to by simply clicking the donate button below.
